Cough in Children, Give Honey

Honey
Do not feel confused when your baby has a prolonged cough. In order to help him sleep better without cough interruption, give him two teaspoons of honey before he sleeps. Honey can be a good alternative to medicines that spread nowadays in the market.

In a study, a total of 270 children aged 1-5 years who were suffering from cough were given one of three types of honey, the eucalyptus honey, citrus honey, labiatae honey, and also fluid with the extract of honey at night. They were asked to drink those liquids 30 minutes before bedtime. Then, the parents of the children were asked to complete some questions about the development of the children's cough at night before the study began, compared with the night after the research was completed.

The results showed that all the children looked better on the second day including a child who was given the extract of honey. However, the children who drank honey were less frequently seen coughing and slept better than those who did not drink honey.

Alan Rosenbloom MD, a pediatrician in Baldwin New York said that honey can be a part of the treatment of cold suffered by children. However honey is less suitable to be consumed by children aged under one year old because of the risk on their metabolism.

Vic Mali MD, a pediatrician at Beaumont Hospital in Troy Michigan argued that all types of honey had remarkable properties. Parents can just choose what  flavour fits the tongue of their children.
