In the past year, it had been reported 30 cases suspected to be skin infection caused by tattooing. The infection was associated with tattoo ink or the water used to dilute the ink. Therefore, tattoo artists and ink makers should only use sterile water to dilute the ink.

The infection was caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium chelonae. This bacteria can cause itching and pain and blistering. The treatment takes about one month and had to use antibiotics.

The bacteria are usually found in the tap water used by tattoo artists to brighten the color of black ink. Currently, tattoo ink that is widely used to give a shadow effect on the tattoo image has been withdrawn from circulation.
